Book Review | Psalm 23: A Colors Primer

I am so excited to share with you the latest release from Catechesis Books, Psalm 23: A Colors Primer!

This post is a little late in the making. Between trips out of state and illness following us home, I haven’t had time yet to sit down and share this book with you.

If you’ve been around for any length of time, you know that I love the Baby Believer books by Danielle Hitchen. They are beautiful, scriptural, timeless tools for instilling God’s word in little hearts. I own all 9 books in the series, and each is wonderful in its own way.

As the title states, Psalm 23 is a colors primer. It takes the text of this familiar Psalm and pairs it with appropriate colors. The illustrations, as always, are beautiful and can inspire conversation as you read through the verses.

The beauty of this approach is the learned association. Once your little one is familiar with Blue representing Christ leading us beside still waters, seeing the color in other contexts will bring the verse back to mind. It’s a simple way of teaching our children to meditate on the word of God in an organic way.

That, I think, is the power of these books. Even if your child is too little to memorize Scripture, learned association is a powerful thing. And if you’re anything like me, you might underestimate just how quickly kids can memorize things! As young as 2 or 3 years old, Vivian could recite some of her favorite stories verbatim. And now at 4, she is enjoying learning Bible verses for AWANA each week. Memorizing doesn’t come as easily to me as it used to, but little minds are so much more absorbent than we sometimes realize, and we should take advantage of this and fill their minds with good and beautiful things.

Psalm 23 is such a beautiful telling of the faithfulness of God. It’s such a familiar Psalm that I think sometimes the words lose their meaning to us. Reading this book, one verse at a time, helps you slow down and really soak in the truth of how for us God is.

I highly recommend adding this book to your personal library. It also makes a great gift for birthdays, Christmas, or baby showers! I personally love board books because even the little hands can hold them.

Below are links for the entire series, if you are interested in taking a look. They are available most places where books are sold, but I’m linking to Amazon for simplicity’s sake. As an Amazon Associate I may earn a small commission (at no extra cost, no worries!) on qualifying purchases.
