I can’t believe I’m saying this, but…
We’re moving! And not just out of our rental – out of state.
What started in April as a question turned into a conversation, which later became a conviction. We believe that God is calling us to leave this beautiful state and make a new home in Arizona.
I’m still trying to wrap my head around it. It is both exciting and terrifying; every aspect of life is about to change. New state, city, neighborhood, home; new routines, friends, church, culture.
This is not a decision that we came to easily. It is hard to think of trading the glorious Pacific Northwest for the dry, rocky terrain of the desert. To leave Oregon, the place I’ve always called home, and go somewhere completely unknown to me. To leave behind so many dear friends.
So why go?
The answer is two-fold. Firstly, it simply isn’t affordable here. The housing market is abysmal and even though Andrew has a well-paying job, there aren’t any halfway decent homes that we can afford. Secondly, we don’t feel that this is the best place to raise our family. Oregon as a whole is a very liberal state; the conservative side is becoming increasingly drowned out. Our values and freedoms aren’t respected, much less valued. We desire the freedom to raise our family as we see best.
These are the things that prompted the conversation. The more we talked about it, the more we felt God guiding us that direction. There were a lot of little things, too many to just be coincidences, that pointed toward Arizona. My parents share our conviction and have felt the same calling; so while we are leaving our lives behind in so many ways, we will still have family, and that is important to us.
It’s an enormous task, to move 1,100 miles into the unknown, but there is no one I would rather go on this adventure with than my husband and daughter. I am excited to see what is in store for us!
Life is going to be crazy busy, but I am going to do what I can to keep writing and share updates with you all. In the meantime, share your best packing / moving tips in the comments below!
